Happy Valley-Goose Bay: Yvonne Jones, the Liberal MP for Labrador, just announced she won’t be running in the next federal election. It’s a big change for her after all these years.
She’s been open about her struggles with breast cancer but shared with everyone that she’s now cancer-free and feeling great. It sounds like she’s ready to embrace new adventures.
Even though she’s stepping back from the election, she’ll continue serving as Labrador’s MP for the rest of her term. That’s good to hear!
Jones has been in the House of Commons since 2013 and has held some important roles, like being the parliamentary secretary for northern affairs and national defense.
Interestingly, her announcement came just a day after another Liberal, Gudie Hutchings, said she wouldn’t seek re-election in her district. Seems like there’s a bit of a trend going on.
Jones is actually the fifth Liberal from Newfoundland and Labrador to announce they won’t be running in the upcoming 2025 federal election, which is set for October. But who knows, it could happen sooner!
In the House of Commons, Newfoundland and Labrador has seven seats, with six held by Liberals and one by a Conservative. It’ll be interesting to see how things shake out in the next election.
