North Yorkshire: A police officer lost her life after being hit by a lorry while helping at another crash scene. Local leaders are calling her “the very best of us.”
PC Rosie Prior and a driver named Ryan Welford were on the side of the A19 when a heavy goods vehicle struck them just before 9 am on Saturday. Sadly, both died at the scene.
A teenage boy, who was a passenger in Welford’s car, was also hit and is currently in serious but stable condition at the hospital.
The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old man from Berwick-upon-Tweed, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but has since been released under investigation.
David Skaith, the mayor of York and North Yorkshire, expressed deep sorrow for the families affected. He emphasized that Rosie’s dedication to public service, even off duty, truly showcased her character.
He and the deputy mayor shared their condolences, stating that their hearts are broken for the families of those who lost their lives. They also thanked the officers who worked at the scene and are supporting those impacted by this tragedy.
Tim Forber, the chief constable of North Yorkshire police, confirmed Rosie’s death with profound sadness. He mentioned that they are doing everything possible to support her family and the family of Welford.
Rosie joined the North Yorkshire police as a student officer in May 2022. Her family described her as a loving mum, wife, daughter, sister, and aunt who will be deeply missed.
Welford’s family also shared their grief, stating he was a hardworking and loving father, husband, son, and brother who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The collision scene was cleared by around 7:20 pm on Saturday, and police are asking for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
