York: The news is exciting for the council’s deputy leader. He encourages everyone to “take full advantage of the opportunities available.”

Ofsted inspectors rated the York Learning service ‘good’ in all areas after a four-day visit in December.

At the time of the inspection, 1,658 adult learners were enrolled in various courses. These included qualifications and tailored learning options.

Most learners focused on English, mathematics, and ICT courses, according to the inspectors’ report.

Inspectors noted that learners and apprentices “value highly the learning experience and support from tutors.”

They work in a respectful environment, which helps them grow in confidence.

“Tutors genuinely care about their well-being and success,” the report states.

Attendance is closely monitored, and most learners attend regularly.

Inspectors found that learners feel safe and well-supported during their studies.

They know how to report safeguarding concerns and trust that leaders will act on them.

Additionally, learners with high needs understand online safety and the risks of sharing inappropriate images.

Further praise was given to leaders and managers for their rigorous oversight of teaching quality, including subcontractors.

However, inspectors noted that improvements are needed for learners with high needs regarding extremism and radicalization awareness.

“Too many learners with high needs do not understand the potential risks,” the report says.

Some learners did not achieve their goals, particularly in functional skills English and math courses.

An action plan is in place to support the subcontractor running these courses.

Cllr Pete Kilbane, the council’s deputy leader, expressed delight at the inspectors’ recognition of the team’s dedication.

“Providing high-quality opportunities for all residents to learn is a key commitment in our Council Plan,” he said.

He urges residents to take full advantage of the available opportunities.
