San Francisco: So, it looks like xAI’s Grok 3 isn’t showing up as promised. Elon Musk had said it would be ready by the end of 2024, but here we are in January, and there’s no sign of it. This isn’t just a one-off; it seems to be part of a bigger pattern with AI launches lately.
Last summer, Musk was pretty optimistic about Grok 3, claiming it would be a game-changer. He even mentioned how it would be trained on a massive GPU cluster in Memphis. But now, it seems like we might see a smaller model, Grok 2.5, before the big one. Some folks on social media caught hints about it on xAI’s website.
It’s not the first time Musk has missed a deadline, though. He’s known for setting high expectations that don’t always pan out. In a chat with Lex Fridman, he did say they were hoping for a 2024 release, but it was more of a wish than a guarantee.
This delay is interesting because it fits into a larger trend. Other companies like Anthropic have also struggled to deliver their next-gen models on time. They even pulled back on releasing their Claude 3.5 Opus model after announcing it would be out last year.
Even giants like Google and OpenAI have faced hiccups with their flagship models. A lot of this seems to come down to the limits of current AI scaling methods. Companies used to see big gains by throwing more computing power at their models, but those returns are starting to dwindle.
Musk himself hinted at this in his interview, acknowledging that they might not hit their ambitious goals. Plus, xAI has a smaller team compared to its competitors, which could be adding to the delays. All in all, it looks like the AI world is hitting some bumps in the road.
