Charleston: Governor-elect Patrick Morrisey held a press conference on January 2, 2025, to introduce 15 officials who will play vital roles in his administration. With his inauguration just around the corner, he’s gearing up to tackle the challenges ahead.
Morrisey’s team includes a mix of seasoned Republican operatives and former colleagues from his time as attorney general. He emphasized that these appointments reflect his vision for change in West Virginia’s leadership.
He expressed excitement about his picks, stating that they understand the significant challenges the state faces. Morrisey is particularly focused on making the government more efficient through audits and accountability.
While most of his team is from West Virginia, he’s also bringing in some fresh talent from out of state. One notable addition is Alex Mayer, who will take over as Secretary of Human Services. Mayer comes from South Dakota and has a solid background in health and human services.
Morrisey acknowledged the difficulties of managing the Department of Human Services, especially after recent scrutiny over its handling of child welfare issues. He believes Mayer’s experience will help address these challenges effectively.
In addition to Mayer, Morrisey announced that Sen. Eric Nelson will step down from the Senate to become the new revenue secretary. This change will create a vacancy in the Legislature that will need to be filled soon.
