WRU Announces Major New Appointment Following Contracts Review
The Welsh Rugby Union has appointed Belinda Moore as Head of Women’s Rugby after a review into recent contract controversies
Belinda Moore, Welsh Rugby Union, Women’s Rugby, Wales, Team GB, London 2012
Cardiff: Big news from the Welsh Rugby Union! They’ve just named Belinda Moore as the new Head of Women’s Rugby. This comes after a thorough review of their contracts situation.
Belinda isn’t new to the game. She’s got a solid background, having worked as a senior producer at the BBC and even led athlete engagement for Team GB during the London 2012 Olympics. She was also the CEO of Premiership Women’s Rugby until last November.
She’s married to former England hooker Brian Moore, and has held significant roles in golf and sports agencies too. So, she’s definitely got the chops for this position.
The WRU’s decision follows a strategic review aimed at improving the women’s game, especially after some serious issues regarding player treatment during contract negotiations. It’s been a rocky road, but they’re looking to turn things around.
In October, reports surfaced that players faced threats of disciplinary action if they didn’t agree to new deals quickly. This led to some big changes in the coaching staff, with the head coach and executive director both leaving shortly after the allegations came to light.
The review recommended creating a new lead for women’s rugby, which is exactly what Belinda will be doing. She’ll manage the head coach and help shape the strategy for women’s and girls’ rugby in Wales.
For now, her role is interim for nine months, and she’s already on the hunt for her permanent successor. She’ll be focusing on player contracts, cultural work with the national squad, and gearing up for the Women’s Rugby World Cup this summer.
Belinda is excited about the future, saying it’s a great time for women’s rugby in Wales. With the game going professional just three years ago, she sees a lot of potential for growth.
She’s aware of the challenges ahead but is optimistic. The upcoming Six Nations clash with England is set to break attendance records, which she sees as a sign of the game’s growth.
WRU CEO Abi Tierney expressed her delight in securing someone with Belinda’s experience, emphasizing the importance of this role for the future of women’s rugby in Wales.
