Wrexham: Wrexham AFC has shared exciting designs for their new Kop Stand. The stand will be at the STōK Cae Ras stadium. It features a unique crenellated-style exterior, reflecting the area’s coal and slate history. The club aims for it to become a city landmark.
The roof is designed to amplify the cheers of home fans. Plus, two dragons from the club’s crest will be embossed on the brickwork. This adds a special touch to the design.
Behind the stand, there will be a public plaza. This space will serve fans on match days and the community year-round. A tribute to miners lost in the 1934 disaster will also be included.
Leading architects Populous designed the stand. They have worked on famous stadiums like Wembley and the Emirates. The new stand will have safe standing, hospitality areas, and facilities for players and officials.
It will hold 5,500 fans but can be expanded in the future if needed. The design features angled brickwork, resembling a crown or even an exploding box.
Declan Sharkey from Populous explained that the façade reflects the local industrial heritage. The design aims to feel like it naturally belongs to the ground.
The brickwork pays homage to Wrexham’s nickname, “Terracottapolis.” This name comes from the area’s rich history of brick and tile production.
Wrexham AFC’s CEO, Michael Williamson, said the new stand will restore the stadium’s classic look. It will also meet UEFA Category 4 standards for international events.
Williamson emphasized that the design represents Wrexham’s history and community. It will be a landmark for the city and support the Wrexham Gateway Project.
Another unique feature is the glass walls at the back of the stand. This design creates a lattice effect, allowing visibility between the stand and the plaza.
Wrexham AFC owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds aim to elevate the club to the Premier League. They need an upgraded stadium while preserving its heritage.
Wrexham Council leader Mark Pritchard praised the Kop design. He believes it will lead to more international football in the city and boost local pride.
Prof. Joe Yates from Wrexham University called the development exciting. He noted it brings North Wales closer to hosting international sports again.
