Bali: Recently, Jimbaran Beach was hit hard by a huge wave of trash. Volunteers worked their tails off, clearing away 70 tonnes of rubbish. One guy even called it the worst trash wave he’d ever seen. It’s pretty shocking!
Sam Bencheghib, an environmentalist, led the charge with a bunch of volunteers. They all came together to tackle the mess. Sam shared on social media that every day, more trash just kept rolling in. It’s like a never-ending battle!
He mentioned that they rallied about 2,000 people to help out. They managed to haul away a staggering amount of plastic, but the cleanup isn’t done yet. They’re hopeful, though, with the community backing them up.
Jimbaran Beach is usually a beautiful spot for both tourists and locals, but it was buried under heaps of waste. The images are pretty wild, showing just how bad the situation is. Quentin Long, who knows a lot about Indonesia, spoke up about the need to cut down on plastic waste.
He pointed out that while the recent storms made things worse, the trash has to be in the ocean first. It’s a big problem that needs serious attention. Long emphasized that seasonal weather patterns do play a role, but we’ve got to tackle the root of the issue.
He also mentioned that ocean currents are a major factor in this mess. They carry debris from all over Southeast Asia right to Bali’s shores. It’s not just Bali, either; northern Australia is facing similar challenges with marine debris.
In the Gulf of Carpentaria, rubbish from nearby countries washes up due to strong currents. Ghost nets, which are discarded fishing gear, are a real danger to marine life. There are efforts underway to clean up and reduce pollution, but experts warn that without global action, this problem isn’t going away anytime soon.
