Fujian, China: Lin Shemu, the world’s oldest woman, has passed away at 122. She lived through the Titanic sinking and two World Wars. Lin died peacefully in her sleep, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.

Born on June 18, 1902, Lin experienced major historical events across three centuries. She spent her life in Fujian, China, and had three sons and four daughters with her late husband.

Her youngest son, now 77, recalls her vitality. She had a sharp sense of hearing and a good appetite until the end. Despite some health issues, Lin remained independent and healthy throughout her life.

Her family described her as good-humored and encouraging. She often told her children, “There is no obstacle in life that cannot be overcome.”

When asked about her longevity, Lin said, “Being able to eat, drink, and sleep. They are a blessing.” Her family never sought to verify her age with Guinness World Records.

Lin took over the title from Japan’s Tomiko Itooka, who passed away in December. Now, Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, aged 116, holds the title.

Jeanne Calment, who lived from 1875 to 1997, is recognized as the oldest person ever, passing at 122 years and 164 days. If Lin’s documents are accurate, she would have outlived Calment by 33 days.
