Cleethorpes: The council leader shared that work to transform Market Place is almost ready to kick off. This project is part of a larger plan to improve the area.
However, Cllr Philip Jackson mentioned there might be some challenges later this year. All three projects funded by the Levelling Up Fund will be happening at once, which could cause some disruption.
During a Facebook Live Q&A, Cllr Jackson answered questions about various topics. These included the regeneration of Cleethorpes and concerns about parking and anti-social behavior in Grimsby.
One resident, Ann Smith, asked when the regeneration work would start. The council has three projects backed by £18.4 million in government funding. These include a new building on Sea Road, improvements to Pier Gardens, and the Market Place revitalization.
Changes to Market Place will focus on making it more pedestrian-friendly. Plans include creating an events space, reducing vehicle access, and removing the car park. A design architect was hired last year, but a contractor for the work is still needed.
Cllr Jackson confirmed that work has already begun on the new building in Sea Road. He expressed optimism about starting the Market Place project soon and mentioned progress on Pier Gardens as well.
He believes these projects will significantly boost tourism in Cleethorpes. However, he warned that the simultaneous work might lead to some issues later this year.
“You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs,” he said, asking for patience from the community. These projects are crucial for the town’s future.
Utility work for the Sea Road building started in autumn 2024, with completion expected by late 2025. The Market Place and Pier Garden projects are set to finish by 2026, with a contractor for Market Place expected to be appointed soon.
