Mottram: It looks like the long-awaited bypass is finally on the horizon. After being talked about for 60 years, work on the Mottram Bypass could kick off soon.

The project got the green light last year, but it all started way back in 1965. The A57 link road, which is expected to cost around £228 million, aims to ease the traffic jam between Manchester and Sheffield.

They were supposed to start work earlier this year in Tameside, but a legal challenge from a countryside charity put everything on hold. Thankfully, that challenge was tossed out by the Court of Appeal in 2024, so now they can finally move forward.

Local MP Jonathan Reynolds is pretty excited about it. He’s been pushing for this project, and it’s great to see it getting closer to reality.

The A57 Link Roads project will create two new roads, including the Mottram Moor Link Road, which will connect the M67 junction to a new junction on the A57 at Mottram Moor.

While the main construction hasn’t started yet, they’re already doing some prep work. Starting tonight, there will be a lane closure on Mottram Moor, which will last until January 19. They’ll be removing a pedestrian island, so expect some traffic delays.

There are also ongoing roadworks at Roe Cross Road, but they’re keeping one lane open in each direction. The National Highways website mentions that the A57 and A628 routes are notorious for heavy traffic, which makes commutes unreliable and can hurt local businesses.

They’re hoping to get shovels in the ground for the actual link road soon, but it’s going to take a while to finish. So, hang tight, everyone!
