Efforts Underway to Address Housing Challenges in Warrington
Warrington council is taking steps to tackle housing shortages and homelessness through updated policies and strategies aimed at residents’ needs

Warrington: The council is making some moves to sort out housing issues. They recently approved a new housing allocations policy for 2025-2030 and updated their strategy for tackling homelessness and rough sleeping.
During a meeting, they pointed out that having a clear allocation policy is essential. It helps decide who gets housing first based on need.
Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, who looks after health and social care, mentioned that while it’s great they’re updating policies, the reality is there just isn’t enough housing available.
She stressed that whatever policies are in place, the priority should always be helping those who need it most.
Cllr McLaughlin also noted that there’s a lot of effort going into increasing housing options for everyone.
She made it clear that while the new policy is necessary, it doesn’t magically create more homes.
Council leader Cllr Hans Mundry added his thoughts too. He pointed out that the new Labour Government aims to build 1.5 million homes, which is something that’s been needed for ages.
He mentioned that this plan will push councils and developers to step up in building more homes in the area.
Cllr Mundry acknowledged that the housing need is real and that the Government has a plan to tackle it, but it’s going to take time since building houses isn’t a quick process.
He believes Warrington is doing its best with the resources it has. The updated homelessness strategy includes a plan to ensure the council and its partners stick to their commitments.
They’ve set four main goals: making it easier for those at risk of homelessness to find stable homes, providing affordable housing, preventing homelessness, and improving lives overall.
