Worcestershire: The RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch is happening from January 24-26. It’s a great chance to see how our garden birds are doing.

Last year, over 600,000 people across the UK joined in, counting more than nine million birds. In Worcestershire alone, more than 8,000 folks took part, with the house sparrow being the star of the show, followed by the blue tit and woodpigeon.

All you need to do is spend an hour watching and counting the birds in your garden, balcony, or local park, then send your results to the RSPB. It’s super easy and fun!

This event has been going on for over 40 years, starting back in 1979. Since then, a whopping 195 million birds have been counted, and nearly 12.1 million hours have been spent just watching them.

Beccy Speight, the RSPB’s chief executive, said it’s a fantastic way to connect with nature right outside your door. By joining in, you’re helping the RSPB understand how our feathered friends are faring.

Last year’s results showed that the house sparrow was the most commonly spotted bird, but it’s sad to note that its numbers have dropped by 60% since 1979. The starling isn’t doing too well either, with an 80% decline.

Beccy also mentioned that anyone can take part, whether you live in a city or the countryside, even if you don’t have a garden.

If you want to join the fun for the 2025 birdwatch, make sure to register by Sunday, January 26. You can get your free Big Garden Birdwatch guide by texting BIRD to 82727 or visiting the RSPB website.
