Woolwich Residents Demand More Police After Two Teen Stabbings in 24 Hours
Woolwich locals are urging for increased police presence after two teenagers were stabbed in separate incidents within a day

The first incident involved a 14-year-old boy named Kelyan Bokassa, who tragically lost his life on a bus. This happened just a day after another stabbing where an 18-year-old was hurt but is now stable in the hospital.
Even though the stabbings were close in distance, police confirmed they were unrelated. Local shop manager Saqib Mushtaq shared that crime is a regular issue in the town center, especially with young people trying to steal.
He mentioned that since the council started revamping the area, crime has decreased a bit. The ongoing £25 million project aims to make the town safer by redesigning spaces to limit hiding spots for weapons.
Saqib pointed out that when customers feel unsafe, they avoid shops, which hurts business. He said, “If people are scared, they won’t come in.”
Roda Keela, a lifelong resident, echoed these concerns. She feels that while improvements have been made, violence has spiked recently. She wouldn’t recommend young people be out after dark, as they can easily become targets.
Roda also mentioned that gang activity is a big problem and suggested schools should teach kids about the consequences of crime.
James Orpington, who’s lived in Woolwich for two years, expressed his shock over the stabbings but noted that it’s a reflection of the times we live in. He believes more activities for young people, like sports facilities, could help.
A spokesperson from the Greenwich council expressed condolences for the victim’s family and stated they’re working with police to address the situation.
Superintendent Louise Sargent from the Met Police assured the community that patrols would increase in the coming weeks. She emphasized that they’re committed to investigating these incidents and supporting local schools to help at-risk youth.
The police are urging anyone with information to come forward, whether by calling 101 or 999 in emergencies.
