Newry: People are asking for better street lighting to feel safer. This is especially important for women walking at night.

SDLP councillor Doire Finn plans to present a motion to the council. She wants the Department for Infrastructure to check where lighting needs improvement.

Finn noted that many areas in Newry lack proper street lighting. She spoke to women who feel unsafe walking in the dark.

She mentioned places like Heather Park and Kilmorey Park have poor lighting. It’s unfair that residents can’t enjoy these spaces in the evening.

Finn aims to identify lighting gaps and push for improvements. She believes public safety is crucial, especially with rising concerns about violence against women.

Another councillor, Laura Devlin, supports Finn’s motion. She emphasized the importance of feeling safe outdoors, especially during dark winter months.

Devlin noted that better lighting could encourage more people to enjoy the outdoors. She looks forward to positive changes from this motion.
