Brisbane: A homeowner recently faced a shocking situation in her backyard that cost her a whopping $15,000 to fix. Kylie, who bought her home six years ago, loved the tropical vibe created by the Golden Canes and Foxtail palm trees around her pool.

At first, the falling fronds and seeds were a bit annoying, but she felt the shade and privacy made it worth it. However, years later, she noticed the tiles near the pool starting to lift, which led to a big problem.

Turns out, the roots of the Golden Cane palms, which are native to Madagascar, were wreaking havoc. While Foxtail palms are less of a threat, the Golden Canes are known for their aggressive growth. Experts have warned that these roots can cause serious damage if planted too close to structures.

Kylie learned this the hard way. The roots snuck in through cracks between the concrete and grout, damaging the pool area. After realizing the extent of the damage, she had to spend a fortune to remove the palms and fix everything.

She ended up paying around $15,000 to restore her backyard to its former glory. Now, Kylie is sharing her story to warn others. She advises anyone considering landscaping around their pool to do their homework or consult with professionals first.

“If I had done the original landscaping, I would never have planted those palm trees,” she said. Now, she prefers using garden palms in planters instead of the troublesome Golden Canes.
