Witchford: Students Will, Alex, and Oscar from Witchford Village College are on a mission. They’re talking to locals about the importance of voting in local elections. They want everyone to understand how these votes impact their community.

The trio feels concerned. They learned that only one in five people know about the upcoming election. Even more surprising, over three in five people don’t participate in local politics at all.

To make a change, they’ve reached out to local MPs. They want to discuss ways to boost voter turnout in local elections.

One resident shared his feelings. He said he feels “isolated” from local politicians because he doesn’t know how to get information about them.

Oscar expressed his disappointment. He said, “As British 16-year-olds, we are saddened to see the lack of involvement from local people and the low levels of political literacy.”

He added, “Local democracy is vital for our political system. It must be encouraged to properly represent the British electorate.”
