Wisbech: The fun fair is moving to Church Terrace car park. This change follows a public consultation. The first fair in the new spot opens on February 28.
The fun fair, organized by The Showman’s Guild, used to be at Chapel Road car park. This location is owned by The National Trust and is leased by Fenland District Council.
However, the lease renewal included a ban on using the Chapel Road car park for the fair. So, the council asked residents for alternative locations. Church Terrace car park was the top choice.
Other options included Somers Road car park and Wisbech Park. The first event at the new location will be The Mart, running from February 28 to March 8.
The Showman’s Guild will use the car park for two weeks, from February 23 to March 9. During this time, the car park will be closed to cars.
Cllr Peter Murphy thanked everyone who participated in the consultation. He said the feedback helped find a suitable location for the fair.
Cllr Jan French noted that Church Terrace car park is central and accessible. She acknowledged the temporary closure would affect motorists but emphasized the importance of balancing community needs.
The council is working with The Showman’s Guild to ensure a smooth transition. They will monitor the car park’s use to confirm it works well for the event and local residents.
After Wisbech, the fair will also visit March and Whittlesey. It will occupy City Road car park from March 15 to March 30, closing it to motorists.
The fair is expected to open to the public on March 20. Part of Grosvenor Road car park will close from March 26 to March 30 for fair trailers and caravans.
Finally, the fair will be around the Buttercross in Market Street on March 27. The weekly market will move to Station Road car park on March 28.
