Washington: A big winter storm is sweeping across the U.S., but it won’t stop Congress from meeting on Monday. House Speaker Mike Johnson made it clear that they’ll be there to certify Trump’s election.
He mentioned on Fox News that the Electoral Count Act requires this to happen on January 6 at 1 p.m. So, no matter how bad the weather gets, they’ll be in the chamber getting it done.
Johnson is hoping everyone shows up, even with the storm brewing. He’s been encouraging lawmakers to stick around in the city.
The National Weather Service is predicting heavy snow and strong winds from the Central Plains to the mid-Atlantic. They’ve issued severe weather advisories, including blizzard warnings in parts of Kansas.
In Washington, they’re expecting a mix of snow and sleet, with accumulations between three and seven inches. That could make for a tough commute and might even lead to some school and business closures.
Winter weather can really throw a wrench in things in the D.C. area, especially since they’ve had pretty mild winters lately and aren’t always ready for snow or ice.
Senators and House members just got back to Washington after their winter break, and Republicans met over the weekend to talk about their plans. They took control of both chambers in the November elections.
Other leaders have also said they’re not thinking about delaying things because of the weather. Lauren Fine, who works for House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, confirmed there’s no change to the schedule.
Usually, the certification process is a formality, but it was disrupted four years ago when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to try to stop the transfer of power to Biden, who won the 2020 election.
Trump still claims he lost due to fraud, but Biden and the Democrats are committed to honoring the 2024 election results and moving forward with the certification.
