British Columbia braces for heavy rain and strong winds this Christmas, with warnings issued across the south coast and Vancouver Island.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Rain, Wind, Storms
VANCOUVER: So, it looks like Christmas in British Columbia is going to be a wild one this year. Environment Canada has put out a bunch of wind and rain warnings for the south coast. They’re saying we’re in for a real stormy ride.
They expect up to 100 millimeters of rain in Metro Vancouver and winds that could reach 100 km/h in places like Victoria. Yikes! This all kicks off around midday on Christmas Day and could stick around until Boxing Day.
With all that rain, we might see some localized flooding, travel delays, and even power outages. BC Ferries is already warning that some routes could be affected by those high winds. Better check before you head out!
There are 24 warnings in total covering most of the south coast and Vancouver Island, stretching inland a bit too. This comes right after the first of three storms rolled through, causing some serious issues like downed trees and power cuts.
The first storm hit late Monday, bringing winds that were almost hurricane-like, with gusts hitting 165 km/h on the west coast of the island. That’s some crazy weather!
BC Hydro reported outages due to fallen trees, and Drive BC mentioned that the Sunshine Coast Highway was blocked by downed power lines. It’s a bit of a mess out there.
And just when you think it might calm down, there’s another low-pressure system on the way, expected to hit southern Vancouver Island early Thursday. Fingers crossed it doesn’t bring more chaos!
