Wickford: The Alpha Garden Centre on London Road is making some big changes. The owners have decided to close the garden centre and are looking to build homes on the site.
They’ve submitted plans to Basildon Council for 75 new homes, along with some upgrades to the area and a commitment to keep the green spaces intact.
This garden centre has been a family-run business since 1979, and Dean Amos, the owner, is ready to retire after decades of hard work. He’s looking to sell the land but wants to get the planning permission sorted first.
Dean mentioned that they plan to demolish all the existing buildings. He’s really focused on making sure the new development is done right, with a design that fits well with the surroundings.
He’s also keen on keeping the natural beauty of the site, like the pond, which is a lovely spot. The idea is to create a more spacious layout with plenty of greenery.
Interestingly, some council members have even suggested naming new roads after the garden centre to honor its history. Dean thinks that would be a nice touch, maybe something like Nursery Lane.
Now, all that’s left is for Basildon Council to review the plans and make a decision. It’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds!
