Why this strong U.S. atmospheric river matters for Canada’s East Coast

Why This Powerful Atmospheric River Could Surprise Canada’s East Coast This Week

A strong atmospheric river is set to impact the U.S. East Coast and Canada, bringing heavy rain and winds, but it won’t be as severe as last year’s storm.

Baron: So, there’s this atmospheric river brewing in the eastern U.S. and Canada, and it’s pulling in a ton of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Pretty wild, right?

This AR is shaping up to be one of the strongest moisture events we’ve seen since December 18, 2023. But don’t worry too much; it’s not expected to be as intense as that last big storm.

The Northeast is going to feel the brunt of it, with New England and Maine facing some nasty winds, power outages, and heavy rain starting Wednesday evening. Flooding could be a concern too, especially with snow melting in the Appalachians.

According to the National Weather Service, this storm won’t hit as hard as the one from last December. Why? Well, the winds aren’t going to push as far inland, and the moisture will be moving along quicker, which should help with water storage.

Still, folks in Maine and New Hampshire should brace for heavy rain and strong winds. Just a heads up: it’s not going to be as severe as last year’s storm, but it’s still something to keep an eye on.

Good news is, this atmospheric river isn’t going to hang around. It’ll be moving into Atlantic Canada by late Wednesday into Thursday. By the time it gets there, it’ll be less intense, but still expect some heavy rain and gusty winds.

With insights from Rachel Modestino, a meteorologist at The Weather Network, it’s clear that while this storm is serious, it’s manageable.
