Why the Winwick Road Roadworks Can’t Take Place Overnight Instead
Warrington residents are frustrated as daytime roadworks cause major traffic jams

Warrington: People are really scratching their heads over the roadworks on Winwick Road. They just can’t believe these are happening during the day when traffic is at its worst.
The work kicked off earlier this month, and it’s causing a single-lane closure on Hawleys Lane and another on the southbound side of Winwick Road.
SP Energy Networks is behind this project, putting in a new underground electricity cable between two substations in Warrington. They say it’s all about future-proofing the local electricity supply.
Unfortunately, these lane closures are set to stick around until spring.
One frustrated driver told the Warrington Guardian that it’s hard to believe anyone thought daytime roadworks were a good idea. The traffic is piling up, especially during rush hour.
They added that the backups are even spilling onto the motorway, creating jams on the M62.
People are wondering why they can’t just do the work overnight when fewer folks are on the road, instead of causing chaos in the town center.
Another local mentioned that Winwick Road feels more like a parking lot than a busy road these days.
SPEN has heard the complaints and told the Warrington Guardian they considered all traffic management options.
However, they concluded that overnight work just isn’t practical for this project.
A spokesperson explained that their team is working every day to get this new cable installed. They’re trying to boost the local electricity network to keep up with the demand for things like electric vehicle chargers.
They’ve been coordinating with Warrington Borough Council to keep traffic flowing while getting the job done safely and quickly.
They looked into all options but found that only doing the work at night wouldn’t work for what they need to accomplish.
SPEN understands the hassle this is causing and has apologized for the inconvenience.
They reassured everyone that they’re doing their best to minimize disruption and will reopen parts of the road as they progress.
They really do get how much these essential works are affecting people and are sorry for any trouble caused.
