New England: The Patriots have a lot on their plate this offseason. They need to figure out how to improve their team and rethink their coaching staff after a tough time since Bill Belichick left.

After bringing in Jerod Mayo to take over for Belichick, owner Robert Kraft made Eliot Wolf the acting general manager. They also added Alex Van Pelt as the offensive coordinator and promoted DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator.

It’s likely that all these roles will be looked at again after the 2024 season. But what should be the top priority for the team? Our insider, Tom E. Curran, shared his thoughts recently.

Curran mentioned that Mike McCann from Sportico had a solid idea. He suggested the Patriots really need a “football overlord.” Curran agrees, saying the Krafts should hire someone experienced to oversee everything.

He believes this person should be able to step in and say, “This isn’t working.” Right now, it feels like they’re just putting Band-Aids on problems. If they want to make changes, like swapping out Van Pelt for Josh McDaniels, they need someone with authority to guide those decisions.

Curran pointed out that former Patriots executive Scott Pioli and ex-Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff could be great candidates for this role. A “football overlord” would help the Krafts and Wolf make better choices about staffing and player decisions.

These choices are super important as the Patriots try to move on from a messy 2024 season. They have a promising first-round quarterback, Drake Maye, who could be key to their future success, but they need the right leadership to make it happen.

Next up, New England will try to end its four-game losing streak when they take on the Buffalo Bills this Sunday.
