Salisbury: So, the scaffolding went up at the Red Lion Hotel, huh? Workers showed up on January 7 and they’ll be there for about a week. Not too long, thankfully!

This hotel is pretty special. It’s Europe’s oldest purpose-built hotel and part of the Best Western group, which has loads of hotels all over the place. Each one is run by its own team, so they decide what needs fixing.

Simon Hartwell, who runs the Red Lion and another hotel in Bournemouth, mentioned that the scaffolding isn’t for anything too thrilling. They’re just fixing some leadwork on the roof and doing a bit of chimney work. Should be all wrapped up by next week!

Leadwork is super important for keeping the building safe from the weather, and chimney repointing is just replacing old mortar. The Red Lion has been around for over 800 years, so it’s seen a lot!

They proudly say they’ve always been a hotel, not just a building that got turned into one. It’s definitely a unique spot in Salisbury, if not all of Wiltshire!
