Why Is Greater Manchester Experiencing Severe Flooding and Damage

Greater Manchester: Recently, the area has been hit hard by flooding, and it’s causing quite a stir. Experts are saying that climate change is a big part of the problem. They point to intense rainfall, new housing developments, and old infrastructure as key reasons for the chaos.
Professor Jamie Woodward mentioned that the New Year flooding set a new record, but it might not be the last. Authorities were caught off guard by a storm that hit on New Year’s Eve, leading to widespread flooding despite some defenses being activated.
In Sale, a month’s worth of rain fell in just 17 hours, causing the River Mersey to overflow. Around 400 people had to leave their homes in Stockport, and many cars were left submerged. Emergency services were busy, responding to over 100 incidents without any serious injuries reported.
Things got even worse in Cheshire, where the Bridgewater Canal collapsed, sending water flooding into fields. It’s a real mess, and the question on everyone’s mind is why Greater Manchester is facing so much flooding and destruction.
Professor Woodward described the situation as a “ticking time bomb,” with more floods likely due to aging flood defenses. He pointed out that the biggest floods on the River Mersey have all happened in the last four years, which is pretty alarming.
He explained that the recent storm was exceptional, with over 66mm of rain falling in a short time. This kind of intense rainfall is becoming more common, and it’s all tied to climate change. Warmer air holds more moisture, leading to heavier downpours.
Mayor Andy Burnham also admitted that the authorities were surprised by the flooding. He mentioned that there would be a review of how the emergency response was handled. The existing flood defenses might not be up to the task anymore.
Professor Woodward stressed the need for better flood management and infrastructure investment. He warned that building homes on floodplains could lead to disaster, creating misery for those affected by flooding.
Weather forecaster Jon Baylis added that rainfall is becoming more intense, contributing to the flooding. He noted that while yearly rainfall might not be drastically above average, the weather is changing, leading to heavier rain in shorter bursts.
