Elgin: So, it looks like WHSmith has shut down its only store in town. This happened just before the St Giles Shopping Centre is set to close on Monday.

The store was in a prime spot in the shopping centre, and they expressed disappointment about leaving Elgin. They really appreciated the support from local customers.

According to a report from The Northern Scot, the closure of the St Giles Centre is due to some serious financial issues and the council’s backing for shopping areas outside of town.

This info came from Upland Developments Limited, the company that runs the shopping centre, which is owned by a businessman from Aviemore.

Back in November, Moray Council decided to chase £750,000 in unpaid business rates from the centre’s owners. As of now, it’s unclear if WHSmith plans to open another store in Elgin.

A spokesperson for WHSmith confirmed the closure and thanked customers for their loyalty. They also mentioned their commitment to supporting the staff during this transition.

It’s a tough time for the local community, losing a familiar spot like WHSmith. Let’s hope something good comes along to fill the gap!
