Where does NBA fine money go? Jaylen Brown wants more player control

Boston: So, Jaylen Brown just got slapped with a hefty $25,000 fine for his throat-slash dunk celebration. That’s a big deal, especially since it’s way more than he’s ever been fined before. Most of his past fines were just $2,000 for technical fouls.

This whole situation raises a pretty interesting question: where does all that fine money actually go? Brown, who’s a Vice President in the NBA Players Association, mentioned that the cash usually goes to a charity picked by the NBA. But he thinks players should have a say in where their money ends up.

He said, “I would prefer it to be that way. It doesn’t always go that way.” It seems like the rules say the money goes to charity, but not necessarily to the ones players want. Brown believes players should have more control over their fine dollars.

Lyzz Ogunwo, who’s also with the NBPA, explained that half of the fine money goes to the NBPA Foundation, while the other half goes to the league. They both use it for charitable efforts. Plus, players with three years in the league can ask for matching grants for their favorite charities, which is a nice perk.

But based on what Brown said, it sounds like there’s still room for improvement. He wants to see more options for players to direct their fines to causes they care about. The Celtics haven’t played since Saturday, but they’re gearing up to face the Pistons again this Thursday at TD Garden.
