Fall Sitting of House of Commons: A Numbers Game

Ottawa, Canada, House of Commons, Non-Confidence Votes, Partisan Bickering

OTTAWA: The fall sitting of the House of Commons was quite a spectacle. It was filled with non-confidence votes and a lot of back-and-forth arguing. Honestly, it felt like not much got done.

This session wrapped up on December 17 and might go down as one of the least productive in Canadian history. Can you believe that?

So, here’s the scoop: there were 56 sitting days. But get this, the Conservatives filibustered for 48 of those days! That’s a lot of talking without much action.

Only 17 bills were introduced, and just three actually got royal assent. Those included some supplementary estimates and a couple of other minor changes. Not exactly groundbreaking stuff.

There were three attempts to bring down the government with non-confidence motions, but the Liberals managed to survive all of them. Talk about a tough crowd!

And if you think the debates were lively, you’d be right. The phrase “axe the tax” was thrown around 303 times. That’s an average of over five times a day! It’s clear that tax issues were a hot topic.

Interestingly, someone even declared, “I wasn’t even thinking about sex” during the debates. Now that’s a memorable quote!

In the end, it was a session filled with drama but not much in the way of real progress. Just another day in the world of politics!
