Weymouth Sports Direct Plans Expansion at Former Currys Store Location
Sports Direct aims to move to a larger site, creating 35 new jobs in Weymouth

Weymouth: Sports Direct wants to move to the old Currys store. This new location is at Jubilee Retail Park, just a short distance away. The new store will be almost three times bigger than their current spot next to Halfords.
The company plans to create up to 35 new jobs. This is in addition to the 15 jobs they already have. They sell popular brands like Nike and Adidas at lower prices.
To make the move happen, Sports Direct has applied for planning permission. They want to add mezzanine floors and make other improvements to the vacant unit.
Sports Direct opened its current store in 2015, creating 13 jobs at that time. Before that, they had a shop on St Mary Street.
The planning application states that their current store is too small. It measures just 696 square meters, which limits the range of products they can offer. A larger space would allow them to meet customer expectations better.
If the application is approved, the new store could create up to 50 job opportunities. Most of these jobs will likely go to local residents.
At a recent council meeting, members supported the application. They believe it will positively impact the local economy and create new jobs.
The final decision on the application will be made by Dorset Council. Local leaders are excited about the potential move, seeing it as a boost for the town.
Dominique Manasseri from the Chamber of Commerce praised the news. He said it shows confidence in Weymouth as a retail destination.
The Currys unit has been empty for nearly a year, closing in March last year. Meanwhile, Primark is also set to open a store in Weymouth, taking over the old Wilko location.
Work on the Primark store will start soon, with plans to open in early 2026.
