Minehead: The West Somerset Railway is looking for new volunteers. They want people to join their locomotive cleaning gang.

A spokesperson shared that this is a great chance to meet friendly folks. You’ll get to work closely with the locomotives and learn how they operate.

This role is also a stepping stone for those wanting to move up to footplate duties. There’s a lot to learn, and if you stick with it, you might even become a fireman or a driver someday.

Volunteers will enjoy the satisfaction of seeing the locomotives cleaned to a high standard. Plus, you’ll help preserve important railway heritage for future generations.

Meetings happen every two weeks in Bishops Lydeard or Minehead. Cleaners can also help with other tasks like engineering and lineside clearance.

There’s plenty of variety based on how much time you can give. Interested? You can apply through the railway’s website or email for more info.

The WSR relies on about 800 volunteers. Their work is vital for the railway’s success and growth.

On any day, you’ll find volunteers in various roles, from footplate crew to ticket inspectors. The WSR runs a 20-mile line from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard, the longest heritage railway in the UK.

Exciting plans are in the works to connect the WSR with mainline train services regularly.
