West London: A new student accommodation block is on the way! This 23-storey building will have over 400 rooms. Ealing Council gave the green light for this project recently.
Originally, the site was meant for residential flats, but those plans have changed. All the councillors voted in favor, except for one who didn’t cast a vote. This is actually the third time the proposal has come up.
The council thinks that building student housing will help the local rental market. The idea is to free up homes currently occupied by students, making them available for families and others looking to rent.
This new block will be located on The Green in Southall and will have 424 rooms. The earlier plan was for three blocks of flats, but now it’s all about student living.
The current site has some empty commercial spaces, and they’ll be tearing those down to make way for the new building. It’s a big change for the area!
Deputy Mayor Cllr Anthony Kelly expressed his excitement about the project, saying it will add to the vibrant atmosphere in Southall. Sounds promising, right?
However, not everyone is on board. A local resident raised concerns, saying there are no higher education facilities nearby and that the area needs family homes instead.
To help with the transition, the developer will contribute £60,000 for local improvements and another £40,000 to support initiatives that boost Southall’s economy.
This area has seen a lot of development lately, especially with tower blocks. The construction is expected to create around 452 jobs, plus five permanent positions once the building opens. The council believes students could bring over £6 million to local businesses.
There were worries about traffic and other issues, but the council feels confident that the development won’t negatively impact the neighborhood.
Demolition of the current site is set for April 2025, with the new building ready for students by the start of the 2026 academic year. Exciting times ahead!
