Blackwood: Great news for the locals! The Blackwood Miners’ Institute has been saved from potential closure thanks to a significant funding boost. Caerphilly County Borough Council just announced that the venue will receive a hefty sum from the Arts Council of Wales.

Last year, there were talks about shutting down the Institute and mothballing it by January 2025. The council was looking to save money, and the Grade II* listed building was on the chopping block along with Llancaiach Fawr Manor.

Previously, the Institute relied on a £347,000 annual subsidy from the council, which was facing tough choices to save £45 million over the next two years. While Llancaiach Fawr Manor sadly closed its doors for good in December 2024, the Blackwood Miners’ Institute now has a new lease on life after successfully applying for funding.

In December, it was announced that the venue could stay open longer while they figured out a new way to run things. Now, the council has confirmed that the Institute will be fully operational for the foreseeable future.

They’re even working on a new events calendar that goes beyond the original closure date of March 31. The Arts Council of Wales has provided £210,000 through the ‘Jobs Protection and Resilience Fund’ to help keep the doors open until at least March 2026.

This funding will give them time to transition to a new business model and trustee structure. After a protest march in September 2024 against the council’s plans, local resident Neal Elstone expressed the community’s passion for preserving their heritage.

People were really upset about the potential loss of the Institute, with many feeling it was a vital part of their community. One supporter online said it was fantastic news, emphasizing the importance of arts and culture for everyone’s well-being.

Cllr Sean Morgan, the leader of Caerphilly Council, welcomed the funding announcement, stating it would help secure a bright future for the Blackwood Miners’ Institute. The community is excited about this positive development!
