Anglesey: The Welsh Government is backing a big tidal energy project. This project will be the largest of its kind in Europe. It’s called the Morlais tidal scheme and is managed by Menter Môn. The project is set to start operating in 2026.

The Welsh Government has taken an £8m stake in Morlais. This investment is about 13.6% of the total project. The scheme has also received £31m from Europe and support from the Crown Estate. They are also looking for more funding from the North Wales Growth Deal.

The site in Anglesey can generate energy for about 180,000 homes. It offers a unique model for tidal energy developers. This will help lower costs as they expand and produce clean electricity.

The investment will help strengthen the grid connection at Parc Cybi in Holyhead. This is part of the Cydnerth phase of the project.

Rebecca Evans, the Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, said they want Wales to lead in tidal technologies. She believes this investment will help Menter Môn grow and create jobs in North Wales.

Dafydd Gruffydd, Managing Director of Menter Môn, welcomed the funding. He said it will help deliver clean energy and local jobs. The goal is to make North Wales a leader in tidal energy innovation.

John Idris Jones, Chair of Menter Môn Morlais Limited, noted the funding shows the Welsh Government’s commitment to renewable energy. He believes projects like Morlais will help build a strong, green economy in North Wales.
