Cardiff: Exciting news is brewing for Welsh football! Plans are in the works to give Wales’ four English Football League clubs a shot at European football through the Welsh League Cup. This could be a game-changer!
Under the new plan, called Project Cymru, Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham, and Newport County would join forces with the 12 JD Cymru Premier clubs. They’d compete in a revamped tournament, and the winner would get a chance to play in UEFA qualifying rounds, likely the Conference League.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is optimistic about this move. They believe it could bring in an extra £3 million a season for football in Wales. Plus, the clubs have agreed to share revenue, which could help level the playing field for grassroots football.
FAW chief Noel Mooney is all in on this idea. He says it’ll unite Welsh football and boost the game at all levels. It’s not just about the money; it’s about making clubs and communities more sustainable.
Wrexham last qualified for Europe back in the 1995-96 season. It’s been a while! If these plans go through, it seems the four clubs might give up their chance to qualify through the English system again.
So, fingers crossed! If everything goes smoothly, we could see this new format kicking off next season. It’s an exciting time for Welsh football!
