Rod Stringer made just one change to the lineup from their last win against Weymouth, bringing in Anthony Grant. He switched things up a bit to try and keep Torquay’s key players in check while looking to hit them on the break.
Unfortunately, things went south quickly. Just three minutes in, Torquay scored from a free kick that seemed a bit dodgy. Jordan Young sent a great ball to the far post, and Jordan Dyer headed it in.
Things got even trickier when Sam Cornish had to leave the pitch due to injury, and Zain Walker stepped in. Welling’s keeper, Dylan Berry, had to make a solid save shortly after, but the Wings started to find their feet. They had a chance from a corner, but Torquay’s goalie, James Hamon, was quick to snatch it.
As the game went on, Welling kept pushing. They had a few more chances, but it was a bit of a struggle to get clear shots on goal. At halftime, Stringer made some adjustments, giving Maxwell Statham more room to roam on the right.
Then, in the 57th minute, Welling finally leveled the score! Gene Kennedy set up TJ Bramble, who headed it in from close range. It felt like they were on the verge of taking control.
But just when it seemed like Welling was gaining momentum, Torquay struck again. A corner was cleared, but Matt Carson sent it back into the box, and Dyer found the net again.
Welling had a chance to equalize again, but Di Trolio’s header went over the bar. In the final minute, Torquay scored once more, sealing the game at 3-1.
It was a tough loss, and while Welling dropped a spot in the standings, they still have a nine-point cushion above the drop zone. Another busy week is ahead for them, and they’ll be looking to bounce back.
