Dumfries: Inspectors have given a thumbs up to HMP Dumfries, calling it well-run. They really liked how the staff treated the prisoners with care and compassion.
During their visit last August, the inspectors found that the inmates felt much better about their treatment compared to other prisons. That’s a big deal!
One standout feature was the wellbeing gardens. They were top-notch, way better than what inspectors had seen in other closed prisons. The gardens were not just pretty; they were used for various recovery activities.
Prisoners enjoyed the relaxing vibe, and even family events took place there. A local dementia support group also got to use the gardens, which is really nice. Plus, the veggies grown there were used in the kitchens and classrooms, with plans to help local food banks too.
Inspectors also noted how clean the prison was, though they mentioned that some parts were showing their age since the buildings are from the 19th century.
However, there’s still room for improvement. The report pointed out that the prison needs better rehabilitative programs and psychological support. Right now, the options are pretty limited, and attendance isn’t great.
It’s a bit disappointing that they don’t offer more programs, especially since many prisoners could really benefit from them. Psychological support is only available one day a week, which isn’t ideal either.
Overall, inspectors saw some real improvements since their last visits in 2015 and 2020. They wrapped it up by saying it’s a very positive report, crediting the management and staff for their hard work.
