Greater Manchester, UK, Cold Snap, School Closures, Road Closures, Weather Warning

Greater Manchester: It’s freezing out there! The region is dealing with some seriously cold weather, with temperatures hitting around -3C this morning. Folks are waking up to a chilly surprise after another frosty night.

Because of the cold snap, several schools have decided to close their doors this week. Urmston Grammar School and a few primary schools are among those staying shut today. The UK Health Security Agency has even extended a cold health alert for the North West until midday on January 14.

This means health services might be pretty busy as more people are likely to get sick due to the weather. Everyone’s being reminded to watch their step on those icy pavements and roads.

There’s a yellow weather warning for ice across western Greater Manchester, including areas like Wigan and parts of Trafford and Salford. This warning is in effect until 10am today, especially after some heavy snowfall hit the region on Thursday morning.

On top of that, the A555 Manchester Airport relief road is closed right now. Stockport Council plans to check it out today to see if it can reopen. Other roads are also feeling the impact, with the A57 Snake Pass being described as ‘just passable’ and flooding reported on the M56 westbound near Runcorn in Cheshire.
