Greater Manchester faces severe cold with road closures and travel warnings in effect as temperatures drop significantly
Greater Manchester, UK, Snow, Ice, Travel Disruption
Greater Manchester: The cold snap is really hitting hard this week. Temperatures have dropped again, and it’s expected to be the coldest night of winter so far. Today, we’re looking at more chilly weather.
A yellow weather warning is in place for snow and ice across the North West, including Wigan. This morning, it’s around -3C, and there’s a lot of mist hanging around.
Unfortunately, the A555 Manchester Airport relief road is still closed due to flooding and icy conditions. Other roads, like the A57 Snake Pass, are also facing tough driving conditions.
Travel disruptions are likely throughout the day, and some schools might even close. St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School in Wythenshawe has already announced it will stay closed today because of heating issues.
Everyone is being advised to take extra care, whether you’re driving, walking, or using public transport. A spokesperson from Transport for Greater Manchester said to plan ahead and check travel updates before heading out.
They warned that roads and pavements could be icy, which makes driving tricky and could slow down journey times. Public transport might also face some disruptions. The staff are working hard to keep things running smoothly and are gritting the roads and tram stops.
