Amble: A couple had to act fast when their baby decided to arrive while they were driving to the hospital.
Amy and Lee Watkinson thought they would reach Wansbeck General Hospital in Ashington. But the baby had other plans and came much sooner than expected.
The couple already has a two-year-old son named Cali. Last Tuesday, they were excitedly waiting for their second child, wanting the gender to be a surprise.
Amy shared that she was offered an induction that morning, but the hospital was full. Later that day, her first contraction hit, and they thought they had plenty of time.
As contractions became more frequent, they decided to head to the hospital. They barely got out of their street when Amy felt the urge to push. Lee called 999 for help.
Things escalated quickly, and Lee realized he would have to deliver the baby with guidance from the operator. He said it was chaotic, but the operator kept him calm and focused.
Lee recalled seeing the baby’s head and thinking, “Oh my god, this is real.” He felt relieved when he heard the baby cry, grateful for a healthy girl.
Baby Edie was born in about ten minutes, and the ambulance arrived shortly after, bringing relief to both parents.
Amy praised the operator for helping her stay calm during the delivery. She had some panicked moments, but Lee’s support reassured her.
When Lee passed Edie to Amy, she joyfully shouted, “It’s a girl!” They cherished that special moment together with their new daughter.
