Nadi: So, there’s been some serious concern in Fiji lately. Two Australian flight crew members were allegedly attacked while celebrating New Year’s Eve. It’s got everyone talking.
Local authorities are looking into it. One crew member reportedly got robbed, and another faced a sexual assault after a night out in the nightclub area. Not cool at all.
The tourism and civil aviation ministry called the incidents “regrettable.” It’s a big deal since tourism is a huge part of Fiji’s economy.
Deputy Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka mentioned that a suspect known to the police has been questioned about the sexual assault. It’s good they’re taking it seriously.
People are worried this could hurt tourism, especially after another incident last month where some tourists got sick after drinking cocktails at a fancy resort. That’s not the kind of news you want to hear when you’re planning a trip.
Hosanna Kabakoro, who runs a foundation for clean water access, said locals feel terrible for the victims. She mentioned that everyone is surprised this happened in Nadi, which is usually seen as a safe spot.
She reassured visitors that the nightlife is generally safe and that Fiji is still a welcoming place. It’s just a shame that these incidents are making people anxious.
Tourism is vital for Fiji, making up about 40% of the country’s GDP. So, you can imagine why everyone is on edge. People depend on it for their livelihoods, whether they work in resorts or sell goods.
Ms. Kabakoro emphasized that Fiji is safe and hospitable, urging visitors to enjoy the local scene with a guide. It’s all about keeping the good vibes going.
Local MP Ketan Lal also expressed concern, saying these incidents could tarnish Fiji’s reputation. He’s calling for a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victims.
Meanwhile, the Virgin crew members have been staying in their hotel since the incidents, and the airline has sent support staff to help them out. They’re expected to head home soon.
As for the tourists who got sick last month, it turned out to be alcohol poisoning, but thankfully, they’ve recovered and are back home.
