Khancoban: A 23-year-old hiker named Hadi Nazari has gone missing in the rugged Kosciuszko National Park. He was last seen on Boxing Day while hiking a tough trail. His friends raised the alarm when he didn’t show up at their meeting point.
Since then, a massive search effort has kicked off, involving police, emergency services, and volunteers. They’ve found some of Hadi’s belongings, but he’s still unaccounted for.
Search expert Paul Luckin shared that in his experience, only a few people are found alive after being missing for long periods in the wild. He emphasized that Hadi’s chances depend heavily on finding drinkable water.
Dr. Luckin pointed out that water is hard to come by in that area, and the thick vegetation makes it even trickier to access. While there is some water, getting to it is a challenge.
They found some rubbish and hiking poles thought to belong to Hadi, but he didn’t have a personal locator beacon. He was believed to have some water and camping gear with him.
Injuries could also play a big role in Hadi’s survival. If he’s hurt but can still move, he might be able to signal for help. But if he’s seriously injured, it’s a race against time to find water before dehydration sets in.
Search teams are using helicopters with infrared technology to scan the area, and specialized crews are navigating the tough terrain. Hadi was last seen on a trail known for its steep elevation changes, making the search even more difficult.
Authorities have committed significant resources to the search, often continuing longer than expected. They’re determined to find Hadi, even if it means searching beyond what seems reasonable for survival.
