Warren Gatland Observes Final Wales Six Nations Squad Trial
Warren Gatland watched as Wales internationals showcased their skills ahead of the Six Nations squad announcement
Gloucester, Wales, Six Nations, Rugby, Warren Gatland, Scarlets
Gatland was at Kingsholm Stadium on Friday night, where Gloucester dominated the game, winning 31-7. They scored five tries, while Scarlets struggled to convert their possession into points.
Sam Costelow had a rough night, leaving the field with a shoulder injury just 12 minutes in. This could complicate things for Gatland at fly-half, possibly opening the door for Dan Edwards from the Ospreys. Meanwhile, Gareth Anscombe missed the match but is expected to be fine moving forward.
Even though Gloucester scored more, Scarlets had the ball more often. They just couldn’t finish their chances. Gloucester’s defense was solid, making it tough for Scarlets to break through.
Tomos Williams, a top scrum-half, didn’t play but is likely to be a key player in Gatland’s final selection. Gloucester’s Freddie Thomas, who played well, is also in the mix for the squad.
Max Llewellyn had a decent game but didn’t shine as much as usual. He’s still likely to be picked, especially with Gatland’s preference for him in the midfield.
Josh Hathaway showed off his speed but had a few handling errors. At just 21, he’s got time to grow and could be a future star.
For Scarlets, Josh Macleod stood out, making some key plays despite the team’s struggles. He’s had a tough time with injuries but is still in the conversation for selection.
Ioan Lloyd played a part in Scarlets’ try but didn’t have a standout game. Taine Plumtree had some good moments but also made mistakes.
Ellis Mee and Blair Murray showed promise, but the team as a whole didn’t perform well enough to impress the selectors.
As for Gloucester, Llewellyn, Thomas, and Hathaway will be feeling good about their chances, even if Hathaway needs to clean up his handling.
The Wales squad for the Six Nations will be announced on Monday, January 13.
