It all started when environmental officers spotted the littering on October 1, 2023. They tracked down the van’s owner and asked him to name the driver. But he ignored their requests.
After he failed to respond, the case went to Barkingside Magistrates Court. Even though he didn’t show up, he was still found liable for the fine. The total came to £1,784.78, which included a £660 fine, £860.78 in costs, and a £264 victim surcharge.
Councillor Syed Ghani made it clear that Barking and Dagenham won’t tolerate littering. He hopes this hefty fine sends a strong message to anyone thinking about littering.
In another case, a man was fined nearly £2,000 for his noisy dogs. Neighbors complained about the barking, leading to a council investigation. The man was also found guilty in his absence and hit with a big fine.
These incidents show that local councils are serious about keeping the community clean and quiet.
