Gold Coast: Swimmers are being warned to steer clear of Currumbin Creek after a sewage leak hit the area on Tuesday. It’s a popular spot, so this news is a bummer.
The city council found out that the leak happened when construction work on the Pacific motorway accidentally broke a sewer main on Duringan St. They acted fast to contain it, but the warnings are still in place.
Officials are waiting for test results before giving the all-clear. A council spokesperson mentioned that while things look normal now, they’re being cautious. Signs are up near the spill site to keep everyone informed.
This isn’t the first time a sewage leak has caused trouble for Gold Coast waterways. Just last December, Tallebudgera Creek faced a similar issue but reopened quickly after tests showed it was safe.
Earlier this year, another leak dumped a huge amount of sewage into a river, which raised some serious concerns. So, it’s definitely a situation to keep an eye on.
