Warrington: So, here’s the scoop. Back in December, they announced that Warburton Bridge Road would be closed from its junction with Manchester Road to Paddock Lane.
Originally, the closure was set to start on January 6, 2025, for four weeks. But guess what? They’ve now extended it.
According to a statement on the Warburton Toll Bridge website, some extra repairs popped up after inspections by contractors. They want to make sure the bridge is safe for everyone.
Plus, the weather hasn’t been too kind, which has slowed things down a bit.
Now, the new completion date is pushed from January 16 to January 21. And just to keep things interesting, they’ve scheduled night closures from January 22 to January 27.
They’re asking for everyone’s patience while they get these important repairs done.
A spokesperson from Warrington Borough Council mentioned that access will be managed by the contractor during the work.
They really need to close the road to resurface it properly.
This whole situation comes after a long back-and-forth between residents, local councillors, and Peel Ports about modernizing the bridge. And, oh boy, they’re planning to raise the toll too!
Last October, it was confirmed that the toll would jump from 12p, set way back in 1863, to a whopping £1. They say this will cover the repair costs and any future work.
Even though the Secretary of State approved the plans, locals and the council are not thrilled about a 733.33% increase in tolls.
