Earlsfield: A peaceful riverside walk is about to get a much-needed upgrade. The Wandle Trail has a gap that forces walkers to navigate busy streets. This has been a hassle for over 20 years.

Residents are eager for change. They’ve gathered over 1,200 signatures on a petition urging the councils to act faster. Merton and Wandsworth councils have recognized this as a priority project.

Recently, Merton council has started looking into buying land from Network Rail. This could help connect the trail and make it safer for everyone. The trail runs alongside the River Wandle, but the gap in Earlsfield is a real pain.

When walkers reach the railway bridge, they have to leave the scenic trail. Instead, they end up on busy roads filled with cars and shops. It’s not the peaceful experience they’re after.

After a £1.1 million feasibility study, Merton council found that buying the land is the best option. Both Network Rail and the Environment Agency are on board with this plan.

Thanks to new developments nearby, like the Garratt Mill project, funding is available. Tony Burton from the Wandle Valley Forum believes fixing this link would be a game-changer.

He says it would create a car-free route for walkers and cyclists, making it much easier to enjoy the area. Both councils agree that this is a priority, and they’re working on a practical solution.

Councillor Stephen Alambritis from Merton is committed to enhancing the Wandle Trail. He’s been collaborating with community groups to secure funding for this project.

Wandsworth council has been asked for their input on the matter. Everyone is hopeful that this long-awaited fix will finally happen.
