Newcastle: Barry Rossiter, a 69-year-old from Walker, was sentenced to 26 years in prison back in October 2022. He faced serious charges, including multiple sexual offences against children.
He was convicted of 23 different crimes that stretched over three decades. The judge, Sarah Mallett, described the impact of his actions as “profound and permanent.”
One of his victims shared her pain in court, saying she lives in “survival mode” because of what he did. She expressed her anger, stating, “I despise your every living cell.”
She felt it was only fair for him to spend his life in prison, given the lifelong trauma he caused.
On March 23, 2024, just a year and a half into his sentence at HMP Northumberland, Rossiter passed away in the hospital due to sepsis from an inflamed bowel.
A report from the Prison and Probation Ombudsman revealed that he hadn’t been physically examined, even though blood tests showed his anaemia was worsening over 20 months.
It was noted that he should have been referred for surgery sooner, which might have caught his condition earlier.
After his death, recommendations were made for the prison’s healthcare team to improve follow-up procedures and ensure that serious symptoms are addressed promptly.
An inquest on January 9 concluded that he died of natural causes.
