London: So, there’s this wild story about a drug dealer who managed to dodge deportation. He’s from Jamaica and has been in and out of prison for years. The guy’s got a pretty rough past, dealing crack and heroin, and even attacking his partner in front of their kids. But here’s the twist: he got to stay in the UK because his daughter might be transgender.
He was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in 2021, which was his fifth time behind bars since moving to the UK in 1991. After he got out, he tried to fight a deportation order. His lawyers argued that his daughter had been struggling with her identity and needed her dad around to talk about it. The judge, CL Taylor, decided that his right to family life was more important than the public interest, which is pretty controversial.
The Home Office wasn’t happy and tried to appeal the decision, but that didn’t go anywhere. Some politicians are really upset about this. Reform MP Rupert Lowe said if you come to the UK and commit serious crimes, you should be sent back home. Others, like former Tory minister Sir Alec Shelbrooke, are shocked by the ruling and want to change the laws to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.
