Birmingham: So, there was this big fuss about a playing field in Perry Barr. The council wanted to sell it off, but the locals had other ideas. They pushed to turn it into a village green, and guess what? They won!
Councillor Barbara Dring led the charge, saying this space should be for the community. The education department of Birmingham City Council wasn’t too happy about it. They thought selling the land would help with their budget issues. But the licensing committee thought differently.
Councillor Saddak Miah chimed in, saying it’s important for the community to keep this space. And he wasn’t alone. Other councillors backed the idea, sharing how vital these green spaces are for everyone. It took Dring five years to get this approved, but she finally did it!
A report showed that the application met all the necessary criteria to be registered as a village green. Once it’s registered, it can only be used for that purpose, which is great news for the locals.
The education department tried to object, claiming they didn’t have a use for the land. But the committee didn’t buy it. They felt the objection didn’t hold much weight, and they unanimously approved the village green status.
